Parts

My parts for beta 1

The lens I am using came off my Dukane 680 overhead projector the focal length of this lens is 327mm. The focal length you need depends on a few things how big your LCD screen is, how far away from the screen your projector is, and how big of a projected image you want. Here is a link to a site that has a calculator so you can figure what size lens you need http://www.gwidijanto.fcpages.com/index.htm

This is a Sharp QA-1650 overhead projection panel designed to be used with a regular overhead projector the screen is 10.5" and has 16.4 million colors with a resolution of 640X480. I am using this panel because if you use a regular LCD you have to take it apart and remove the back light and the driver board so you can have a bright light shine through it. Many people haven't had very good luck doing that, some of the ribbon cables tear and are expensive and hard to repair. These can be found on abbey but be sure and do some research on the panel before you bid some are black and white and some do not support video, the best place to find info is google.

A fresnal lens is used behind the LCD to focus all the light into the projection lens, this lens came off my dukane 680 overhead projector some people have been using regular page magnifiers that you get at Office Depot or other office supply stores. I use this one because it is higher quality and is made for projection. If you use a page magnifier you have to use two back to back the first lens makes the light beam parallel and the second focuses the light to the projection lens.

The reflector I used came off a Halo halogen recessed downlight a H7684T here's a link to the pfd for this light http://www.cooperlighting.com/specfiles/productinfopdf/2000BG219.pdf I believe this light is about $100 but I got it for free because it was missing some parts, I only used the reflector and the mounting bracket.

This is the bulb and ballast, the bulb is a 400W metal halide rated at 38,000 lumens at 4000K color temp and lasts about 20,000 hours but I recommend changing it after 10,000 because over time the light does get dim. The ballast is a 400W multitap metal halide ballast both can be found at some online stores and most all electrical supply stores, costs about $20 for the bulb and $70 for the ballast. The bulb is a MVR400/U/ED28 the ballast is a M59 multitap. I will be changing to a 1000W metal halide bulb soon I just don't think the 400W is bright enough for my setup.

I got the 1000W bulb and wow that thing is bright it is a MVR1000/U/BT-37 it has 115,000 lumens and lasts 12,000 hours the mean lumens is 90,000 so you will be able to use this bulb for it whole life and not really worry about it getting to dim. This bulb is extremely hot but in my current setup it seems to have no problems the fresnal lens is still not getting hot the fan and vent are taking care of the extra heat.

The reflector focuses all the light to a small point about 1" in diameter at the opening and the beam needs to be spread out onto the fresnal lens so I mounted a aspheric condenser lens with a focal length of about 35mm in front of the light. This makes a even distribution of light on the fresnal lens, I also got this off my dukane 680 overhead projector.

With the 1000W lamp I had to turn this lens around when it was the other way it projected a small dark circle in the middle of the screen it looked like the top of the bulb but when I flipped it the circle disappeared.
